The seventh episode of House of the Dragon season 2 is now out, and the power equation between the Greens and the Blacks has changed significantly with the addition of two new dragonriders.
After Adam of Hull got mixed up with Seasmoke in last week’s episode, Rhaenyra and Mysaria planned to recruit the Targaryen bastards for their two riderless dragons. Well, the plan finally worked. Here’s the full explanation of the ending of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7.
Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White are the new dragonriders
The Targaryen bastards called the Dragonseeds arrived at Dragonstone with a difficult task: capturing Vermithor and Silverwing. As soon as the group led by Rhaenyra reached the pits and summoned Vermithor, the dragon entered full ‘Godzilla’ mode, wreaking havoc and killing everyone in its path.
While the destruction continued, Hugh the Hammer somehow managed to save his life. While trying to protect another woman, he drew Vermithor’s attention. However, instead of attacking him, the dragon calmed him down and chose him as his rider. Hugh the Hammer has been an important character since the beginning of the season.
He is a blacksmith from King’s Landing who lost his daughter in the famine caused by the war after the Greens decided to close the gates to the city. He went to Dragonstone against his wife’s wishes to claim the dragon and succeeded. The blacksmith will now have an integral role in the civil war.
Meanwhile, another dragonseed who saved her life and nearly escaped the pits is Ulf the White. Ulf is the same man who bragged about his Targaryen blood to the little people in the early episodes and used his status to get free ale at the tavern. However, he never dreamed he would become a dragonrider.
Ulf is horrified when he learns of Rhaenyra’s offer of dragonseeds. However, his friends and companions persuade him to join the fleet to Dragonstone. At Dragonstone, while he is still afraid of dragons, Ulf encounters Silverwing when he tries to escape the dungeon. The dragon then chooses him as its rider.
Why didn’t Emond attack Ulf in the end?
At the end of the episode, Ulf flies over King’s Landing with Silverwing. Shocked by the presence of another dragon, Aemond approaches Vhagar, and the two begin to pursue Silverwing and Ulf. However, when Aemond sees Ulf flying towards Dragonstone, he orders Vhagar not to attack him. The prince does not want to enter enemy territory alone, as he knows that the Blacks have new dragons in their hands. Sensing the danger and shocked by the Blacks’ tactics, he tells Vhagar to return to King’s Landing.
