  • Doug Liman says he and Tom Cruise are still discussing an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ sequel.
  • In the original 2014 film, Cruise was stuck in a time loop.
  • There have been talks about a sequel in the past.

It’s been 10 years since director Doug Liman pitted Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt against invading alien forces in the time-traveling sci-fi thriller “Edge of Tomorrow.”

While the film hasn’t been a huge box office hit in the last few years, its popularity has continued to grow, and there’s been talk of a sequel from time to time, usually courtesy of one of the filmmakers.

And a Interview with Empire As for his new film “The Instigators,” he said he and Cruise aren’t giving up hope on the next movie.

What was the story of ‘Edge of Tomorrow’?

When Earth is attacked by unstoppable aliens, no military unit in the world can defeat them. Major William Cage (Cruise), a cowardly propaganda officer who has never seen combat, is assigned a suicide mission.

Killed within moments, Cage finds himself trapped in a time loop in which he relives the same brutal battle – and his own death – over and over again. However, Cage’s combat skills improve each time, bringing him and veteran soldier Rita (Blunt) closer to defeating the aliens.

Here’s what Liman said about a possible follow-up:

“We keep talking about it. We love that world. I don’t know how long it took Cameron to make The Terminator, but at the time it felt like a very long time.”

And according to him, he hopes this film too will get a second life like his other works.

“Tom and I watched it again about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years. I thought, ‘Wow, this is a really good movie.’ I haven’t always had the good fortune of making movies that do a huge opening weekend. ‘The Bourne Identity’ lost to ‘Scooby-Doo’ in its opening weekend. And ‘Swingers’ came and went in theaters. What I’ve come to understand is that I’m making movies for the long haul. I’m an ego-driven guy, I want to be praised right now. But I also recognize that if given the choice, I’d rather make movies that people are still watching 50 years from now.”

Is there a chance of an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ sequel?

Given that the film may not have done great at the box office ($370 million off a $178 million budget), it hasn’t been a priority for Warner Bros.

Still, according to Christopher McQuarrie, who helped prepare the script for shooting (and who regularly works with Cruise, most notably on the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise), an idea for a potential new film exists.

What is this McQuarrie told ComicBook.com About that:

“We had a really great idea for a sequel. I would have loved to see it come together. It’s just that a lot of stars would have to align. It’s a really hard job.”
