While ‘The Acolyte’ received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, it was the target of hatred from certain toxic segments of the ‘Star Wars’ fandom and did not attract the attention of the rest of the series’ wider community.
“In the Age of Light, Darkness Grows.”
What was the story of ‘The Acolyte’?
Created by Leslie Hedland of ‘Russian Dolls’, ‘The Acolyte’ is set in the final days of the High Republic era in a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers.
It focuses on Osha Aniseya (Amandla Steinberg), a former Jedi Padawan-turned-engineer who unexpectedly reunites with the Jedi who was training her, Master Soul (Lee Jung-jae of ‘Squid Game’). When a mysterious killer starts killing. Members of the Jedi Order.
As it turns out –– spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the show –– the killer is his twin sister May (also Stenberg), who’s on a quest for vengeance to find those responsible for the destruction of her community.
The show’s cast also included Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Daphne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman and Carrie-Anne Moss.
What’s up with ‘Star Wars’?
Despite the loss of ‘The Acolyte’, the vast ‘Star Wars’ universe is still thriving on the big and small screens.
Companion series ‘Ahsoka’ has already made a second season, and the latest series set in the galaxy far, far away, a ‘Goonies’-like ‘Skeleton Crew’, docks on Disney+ in December.
The darker, and more morally gray show ‘Endor’ returns next year.
And in what is the most successful Lucasfilm TV effort to date, ‘The Mandalorian’ is heading to cinemas, with Jon Favreau working on ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, which is set to hit theaters on May 22nd, 2026.
What about Boba Fett?
While ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ gives the TV characters a chance to make their movie debuts, it doesn’t look like everyone is along for the ride.
While pouring Boba tea at a panel at Fan Expo Chicago over the weekend, actor Temuera Morrison hinted that bounty hunter Boba Fett is unlikely to make an appearance.
Here’s what Morrison had to say (Via Screen Rant):
“I’m still waiting for the phone call to be quite honest. I think we’re on the shelf for a while. Maybe we’ll come off the shelf later.
It’s perhaps no surprise that Mando spin-off series ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ failed to capture the public imagination (at least not until it effectively became ‘The Mandalorian’ season 2.5).
Hence, ‘The Acolyte’ has been cancelled. Maybe Boba Fett has been canceled for now too…?
